Amino Acid

Organic molecules that serve as the building blocks of peptides and proteins. Each amino acid contains an amino group, a carboxyl group, and a unique side chain (R group) that determines its properties. There are 20 standard amino acids encoded by DNA, plus several non-standard amino acids found in nature. The sequence of amino acids in a peptide chain determines its three-dimensional structure and biological function.
