Afamelanotide is a synthetic alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) analog approved by the FDA for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). It stimulates melanin production, providing photoprotection for patients with EPP. It is administered as a controlled-release subcutaneous implant.
