A protein molecule on the surface of or inside a cell that receives chemical signals from outside the cell. When a signaling molecule (ligand) binds to a receptor, it triggers a specific cellular response. Peptide receptors are typically G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) or receptor tyrosine kinases located on the cell surface. The specificity of receptor-ligand interactions determines the selectivity and potency of peptide compounds.
