Antagonist

A molecule that binds to a receptor without activating it, thereby blocking the action of agonists at that receptor. Competitive antagonists compete with agonists for the same binding site, while non-competitive antagonists bind elsewhere to reduce receptor function. Antagonist peptides are studied for their ability to modulate overactive signaling pathways, with somatostatin analogs being a well-known example.
